Oh, Honey

Shucks

Oh, Honey — a story by Pemba Umoja

"Shucks."

"Now that's not a good way to start your morning, honey!"

"Shucks."

"What is it now, honey? Didn't sleep well?"

"Shucks."

"Come on, honey. Everything will be better. It just has to be."

"Shucks."

"OK, honey, I'll get up and get our breakfast going. The usual, right?"

"Shucks."

"OK, I'll make fresh orange juice in addition to your mocha cappuccino with cinnamon and honey."

"Shucks."

"OK, you are pulling out all the stops, aren't you? I'll make strawberries and whipped cream as a breakfast dessert."

"Shucks."

"OK, honey, I won't forget the paper at the end of the driveway."

"Shucks."

"Of course, I'll have to get it out of the plastic bag and ready for you to read before you sit down for your hot croissants."

"Shucks."

"OK, I'll give you a kiss so that you can wake up."

(Smooch on the head.)

"Big Bear, you know I never get up without my kiss first. Never, ever. Not without my kiss first."

(She pulls him back into bed.)

Big Bear:

"Shucks."

"Oh, honey…"

"No, honey!"
