Ferry

I am taking a ferry in the fog, through a grand ocean.

Ferry — a poem by Pemba Umoja

I am taking a ferry
in the fog,
through a grand ocean.

The wind
makes it difficult.

The sea is brutal
and fierce.

The sun sometimes hides,
the stars too.

I am the only passenger,

the only captain,

the first mate,

the crew.

The propellers are my bare,
blistered feet.

The engine,
my beating, wounded heart.

I am taking a ferry
in the fog,
across a grand ocean.

It is my only ride.
