Confession Before Marriage

The Weirdest of All Weddings

Confession Before Marriage — a story by Pemba Umoja

"I have a confession to make."

"What?"

He peers into her eyes.

"What is it?" she asks.

"It's just that. I think you should know—know before you marry me, I mean."

"What are you talking about? What is it?"

"It's just that."

It is as if the words are too big for his lips.

"It's just that. I'm weird."

She stares at him, perplexed. This seemingly run-of-the-mill boy. Her boy. Weird?

Shaking it off, she replies, "That's okay. I'm weird too."

This time he stares at her, perplexed. This seemingly run-of-the-mill girl. His girl. Weird?

How could it be?

After a pregnant pause, they burst into giggles.

It will be the weirdest of all weddings, they muse.
