A Jewish Woman, a Palestinian Man

A whispered longing across a thousand windows

A Jewish Woman, a Palestinian Man — a story by Pemba Umoja

“I am waiting for you in Tel Aviv,” said the Jewish girl to the Palestinian man.

His heart throbbed. Everywhere he looked, he saw her. Walking down the street. Sitting at a cafe. Standing before him.

He rested his cheek against hers. She rested hers against his.

“I am waiting for you. When are you coming?” she whispered.

More bodies fell like waves rolling onto the shore.

There she was looking through the window.

A thousand windows away.

Through scratched glass with swirling lines.

The windows grew foggy, beneath their breath.

Their cheeks touched.

“When?” she asked.

Waves crashed.

Waves crashed.

Waves crashed.
