Sail On

The sailor, the boat, the dock

Sail On — a poem by Pemba Umoja

The mind is the sailboat
cascading upon the winds

but the self can see the sailor
from the dock.

A brusque wind
returns the self to the mind
to the boat
on the verge of capsizing.

A reflection upon the water
returns the mind to the self

to the spectator on the dock
watching the sailor

across the winds and waves

invisibly moving
from dock to boat
boat to dock,

We sail through life
over rivers and oceans
calm and tumultuous

doing, watching, thinking, observing

sharing the seas with others
and the docks
